he Web Guide to Chemistry
is now under construction. The guide will have three major sections: 
  • Web Survival Guide- shows novices how to use basic Web tools and technologies. New features include
    • a glossary of Web jargon
    • a directory of step-by-step procedures for common tasks (browser and plugin installation, software downloading, using search engines, purging browser cache, capturing images,...)
    • how to use and install chemistry specific Web components (chemical MIME types, JCAMP spectra, Chime, and RasMol)
  • Chemistry Resource Guide- an annotated list of excellent chemistry resources, including online courses, discussion groups, journal and news sites, tutorials, and chemical databases. The guide will also include a textbook independent index of sites that support core learning objectives in introductory chemistry.
  • Courseware Guide- focuses on Web publishing for chemists and chemical educators, including 
    • an HTML primer 
    • introduction to JavaScript and server side includes
    • writing Chime and RasMol scripts
    • processing forms with Perl
    • a survey of emerging, advanced, and proprietary technologies (Java, Shockwave, DHTML, ...)
    • a survey of software packages for course delivery (TopClass, WebCT, ...)
    • some basic principles of instructional Web design
    • A Tricks of the Trade column
    • pointers to excellent examples 
Printable (PDF) versions of the guides will be available on the site.
