I don't know exactly, but I expect it was done in the 1930's when crystal
field theory was being developed by physicists. It comes out of the
application of the potential from point charges arranged in the desired
geometry to the d orbitals. "Introduction to Ligand Fields" by Ballhausen
(McGraw-Hill, 1962)is one text that goes through this and probably
references the original literature.
