Examples of Bad Design

What makes something a good or bad invention.  How can we tell if the tool has faults and how are they classified.  One way of finding the failures is looking at examples of bad design. By looking at these examples we can learn what not to do when designing a product. Also what to look for when purchasing a product.  All examples are based on the design principles  outlined by researchers Mandy Khader and Matt Brew.

Case studies of Bad Design:

Researcher holding a mechanical pencil.

Researcher holding a camara

Researcher displaying diagram of faulty sink.

Problems with the mechanical pencil

Poor labeling for a camera

The problem with some water efficient sinks

Researchers displaying the problems with a McDonald's coffe pot, gum, and a cup of noodles.

Researcher holding a electronic tuner.

Researcher showing off a poorly mapped watch.

What not to do when designing a product

A tuner made for a two year old

Ever have a problem setting your watch???

Researcher game controller.

Researcher showing us a diagram of the school's microfridges

Instructor holding a poorly constructed cork-screw

Too many buttons on your game controller???

The problem with too many buttons on the micro-fridge

The cork-screw that couldn't handle the turn
